Mid HAT vs Hi HAT — What's the Difference?
Before installing, it helps to understand what you have. Both desks share the same base installation process but differ in key specs:
| Feature | Mid HAT ($1,099) | Hi HAT ($1,179) |
|---|---|---|
| Lift Stages | 2-stage | 3-stage |
| Height Range | 27.25" – 46.75" | 23.75" – 49" |
| Lift Speed | 1.2" per second | 1.5" per second |
| Motors | Dual sync | Dual sync |
| Weight Capacity | 300 lbs | 300 lbs |
| Warranty | 12-year electric + lifetime frame | 12-year electric + lifetime frame |
| Best For | Standard height users | Shorter/taller users, shared desks |
The Hi HAT's 3-stage lift gives it a wider range — going lower for shorter users (as low as 23.75") and higher for taller users (up to 49"). If you're between 5'4" and 6'2" the Mid HAT covers you perfectly. Outside that range, the Hi HAT is the right call.
What's in the Box
Your HAT Collective standing desk ships with:
- Base frame (two legs + crossbar)
- Dual sync motor column(s)
- LED programmable handset
- Power cable and controller
- Cable management tray
- Hardware pack
- Installation instructions
Worksurfaces are ordered separately and ship alongside the base.
Tools Required
- Allen wrench (included in hardware pack)
- Phillips head screwdriver
- Two people recommended for lifting the frame
Step-by-Step Base Installation
Step 1 — Unbox and lay out all components Lay the frame components on the floor or a large flat surface. Check the hardware pack against the parts list in the installation instructions to make sure everything is present before starting.
Step 2 — Assemble the base feet Attach the base feet to the bottom of each leg column. The feet slide into the leg and lock with the included hardware. Make sure both feet are fully seated and secure before proceeding.
Step 3 — Connect the crossbar Slide the crossbar into both leg columns and secure with the provided bolts. The crossbar determines the width of your desk — check your worksurface size before locking it in place. Frame width options are 24"-41" or 42"-72".
Step 4 — Install the motor and lift columns Connect the lift column assemblies to the base frame. The dual sync motors plug into the control box — make sure both motor cables are fully connected before powering on.
Step 5 — Connect the handset Plug the programmable LED handset into the control box. The handset gives you 3 programmable memory positions for your preferred sitting and standing heights.
Step 6 — Attach the worksurface Flip the assembled base upside down and attach your worksurface using the provided screws through the mounting holes in the frame. Two people make this step significantly easier.
Step 7 — Route cables Use the integrated cable management tray to route your power cables and accessories neatly along the desk frame. This keeps your workspace clean and prevents cables from tangling during height adjustment.
Step 8 — Power on and program your heights Plug in the power cable and power on the desk. Follow the handset instructions to reset the desk to its lowest position first, then program your preferred sitting height (Memory 1) and standing height (Memory 2). A third memory position is available for a mid-height or second user preference.
Step 9 — Test the anti-collision sensor Place an object underneath the desk and press the up button — the desk should automatically stop and reverse when it detects the obstruction. This confirms the anti-collision safety sensor is working correctly.
Programming Your Memory Heights
Getting your memory heights right is important for actually using your desk throughout the day:
Sitting height: Elbows at 90 degrees when seated, shoulders relaxed. For most people this is between 26" and 30".
Standing height: Elbows at 90 degrees when standing, shoulders relaxed. For most people this is between 38" and 46".
Tip: Set your standing height first thing, then lower to your sitting height. Most people stand too high initially — bring it down until your shoulders drop naturally.
Troubleshooting Common Issues
Desk won't move after setup Reset the desk by holding the down button until it reaches the lowest position, then release and hold again. This recalibrates the motor controller.
Desk moves unevenly Check that both motor cables are fully seated in the control box. Loose connections cause sync issues between the two motors.
Handset not responding Check the handset cable connection at the control box. If the connection is secure and the handset still doesn't respond, refer to the troubleshooting guide included with your desk.
